Introduce Policies Banning TV Stations Fielding Presenters With Fake, Real Foreign Accents – Reno Omokri Tells NBC
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has asked the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to consider introducing policies that will ban television stations from fielding presenters with fake or real foreign accents.
He reminded everyone that this is Nigeria and anyone who must be on Nigerian TV should have a Nigerian accent or at least try to speak like a Nigerian
Omokri, who stated this in an appeal to NBC on his official handle on Wednesday, said the situation is causing inferiority complexes in Nigerians when TV stations hire people who “either speak through their noses or start murdering the letter R in their falsettos.”
He argued that by so doing, “What we are subliminally communicating to Nigerians is that the Nigerian accent is not good enough and that for you to be seen as on point, you must reject your Nigerian-ness and pretend to be what you are not.”
He further argued that the Nigerian accent is cool and sexy, adding that it has made singers like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, Kizz Daniel, and other global stars.
“Do you think these guys would be where they are if they were speaking like Americans and Britons? Come on, NBC. Do your job! Make Nigerians proud of being Nigerians,” he said
