Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has reacted to the arraignment of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by the Department of State Services (DSS).
KanyiDaily recalls that the DSS had earlier arraigned Godwin Emefiele on a two-count charge of illegal possession of a single-barrel gun and 23 live ammunition.
During the court proceedings on Tuesday, Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges and he was granted bail for N20 million by the Lagos Federal High Court.
Following the court ruling, there were concerns about the DSS’s intention to rearrest him, leading to a struggle between DSS operatives and prison officials over Emefiele’s custody.
Reacting on her Twitter page, Oby Ezekwesili criticized the DSS over the treatment melted on Emefiele, stressing that the security agency should stop embarrassing itself.
She also demanded an apology from the DSS to Nigerians for what she perceived as manipulation and a diversion from more critical issues plaguing the country.
The former minister expressed her dissatisfaction with the focus on “illegal possession of firearms” as the charge against Emefiele, considering the economic challenges the country faces.
She implied that the charges were a diversion from the real concerns and actions that have negatively impacted the Nigerian economy.
Ezekwesili also called out the DSS Director-General for his public association with certain politicians and questioned their handling of the case.
She wrote, “Imagine. So after all the monetary policy damage his boss @MBuhari and the former @cenbank committed against the Nigerian economy and people, it is for “illegal possession of firearms” that State Security charged him to court? Nonsense.
“@OfficialDSSNG must immediately apologize to Nigerians for daring to take citizens for a ride on this Emefiele’s court case.
“Stop embarrassing yourselves and tell us the truth of the Emefiele matter jooo. Be guided.
“The DG of @OfficialDSSNG who without decorum publicly advertises that he is a close friend of @officialABAT,obviously thinks the average IQ of sensible Nigerians is as low as that of the politicians he has reduced that Agency of @NigeriaGov to serve.”
KanyiDaily recalls that a Federal Capital Territory High Court had ordered the DSS to release Godwin Emefiele on bail if he is not taken to a court within one week.
