The government of President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic has been toppled by military officers in the country.
The soldiers took over the state television and announced a successful coup operation in the West African country on Wednesday night.
This comes hours after President Bazoum was held inside the presidential palace by the presidential guard in the country’s capital, Niamey on Wednesday morning.
The president was eventually kicked out despite widespread condemnation that greeted his detention.
Kanyi Daily earlier reported that the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) through its Chairman, Bola Tinubu said attempt by the military to seize power was unacceptable. He then sent a delegation to the country, which is Nigeria’s neighbour to the north.
The military junta quickly announced the immediate closure of the country’s borders and a nationwide curfew that was imposed indefinitely.
This is breaking news. More details shortly.
