A Nigerian man has accused the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Phillip Shaibu, of allegedly stealing his Daytona Gold wristwatch worth $250,000.
The man, who made the allegations in a video that has gone viral on social media, said the incident happened during the 2023 general election in Benin City.
According to him, he and several others were purportedly “abducted” by security personnel affiliated with the deputy governor before the elections.
The man said these security agents purportedly transported them to Benin City and allegedly attempted to forcibly implicate them with a gun.
The complainant explained that during the confrontation, a scuffle ensued after they resisted the attempt to forcefully plant a gun’ on them.
He alleged that amidst the chaos, the security personnel seized his Daytona Gold wristwatch adorned with diamond studs, as well as his diamond ring.
The man revealed that following the incident, he wrote a statement to the police indicating that his Daytona Gold wristwatch had been confiscated on the orders of Phillip Shaibu’s security personnel.
He said his fingerprints were taken but after a detailed investigation, it was discovered that gun in question did not belong to him, however, his watch was never returned.
The aggrived man disclosed that weeks later, during an “Afenmai congress” event in New Jersey, United States, he saw Edo deputy governor wearing his wristwatch.
He said, ‘’To my dismay, this year, about some few weeks ago, I went to America. I was in New York and I got to hear that there was this Afenmai congress in New Jersey.
“To my surprise, I saw Phillip Shaibu with my Daytona wristwatch with my name on it.
“I wanted to embarrass him but I was asked to slow down and I should take the matter because it was outside the country and it will not be good for such a thing to happen.”
Despite his inclination to publicly address the situation, the man said he was advised to exercise restraint, considering the international context of the situation.
The man said his reason for not acting at the time was due to the incident occurring outside the country, but upon his return to Nigeria, he reported the incident to the local police.
However, he man lamented that no action has been taken by the state police in response to his complaint, forcing him to submit a petition at the police headquarters in Abuja.
The aggrieved man concluded his declaration with a vow to reclaim his wristwatch from the deputy governor by confronting him whenever their paths may cross.
The Deputy Governor has not issued a response to the allegations.
