Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo has revealed that her first encounter with poverty was during her marriage to her ex-husband, Ademidun Ojo.
During an interview on Toke Makinwa’s show, “Toke Moments,” Iyabo Ojo revealed that she met her husband when she was young and naive, and he had presented himself falsely to her.
Contrary to his claims, the actress said she found out during their dating phase that he was living in a modest “Face-me-I-slap-you” housing arrangement.
Iyabo Ojo said it was during this period that she realized what it was like to live in poverty, having previously enjoyed a life of luxury.
While recalling that she had as much as N100,000 back in 1996 and was never destitute, the actress said that she felt she lacked the attention she desired, which her ex-husband had provided to win her over.
Iyabo also revealed that her grandmother had been one of the wealthiest women of her time, and she hadn’t experienced hardship until her marriage.
She described her relationship with her ex-husband as an adventure, as she sought the attention she craved, which he offered at the time.
The actress clarified that her lavish lifestyle didn’t begin after she became famous in Nollywood.
She admitted to having a driver take her to school, being unaware of power outages by the Nigerian Electric Power Authority (NEPA), and having a trust fund established by her grandfather when she turned 18.
Iyabo emphasized that people should not blame the wealthy for not understanding the challenges of the poor, as she herself had no knowledge of “Face-me-I-face-you” housing conditions until her marriage.
