Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has called an Invictus Games athlete Glory Essien “my Nigerian sister” during an event in Germany.
Meghan Markle was in Dusseldorf, Germany, to promote the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded and disabled military veterans set up by her husband, Prince Harry.
The Duchess of Sussex gave an emotional address to the 1,600 competitors, friends, family, and all those who attended the games on Wednesday night, September 12.
Among those she greeted before the event was competitor Glory Essien, who she hugged and told: “You’re my Nigerian sister!”
Essien is a powerlifter representing Nigeria at the games. She is also a military veteran, having served in the Nigerian Air Force for 10 years.
Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry had revealed at the opening ceremony that his wife was cheering on the African nation as he discovered she is 43% Nigerian.
Meghan’s ancestry was revealed on an episode of her podcast, Archetypes, in October 2022. She said that she did a genealogy test and was surprised to learn that she had Nigerian ancestry.
The Duchess of Sussex said that she was “excited to start to dig deeper into all this” and learn more about her Nigerian heritage.
