Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, has stated that her sole rival in music is herself.
Nobody, she claims, can compete with her musically.
The Oscar-nominated diva chatted with Hot 97 FM in New York recently.
“I’m competitive within myself, but I’m not competitive with other artists,” she explained. Nobody compares to me.
“I’m unique. I’ve had a family. But, more importantly, I’m all about being genuine to myself. My music is for those who can relate to it. So my music is created by me. And my music is my escape.
“I began making music because I lacked friends.” I had something to say, but I didn’t know who to say it to. So I’d simply sing it. I’ll compose a song and record it on my phone. I’d been doing it for years.

“Music, then, is my outlet.” I have to release it whether anyone listens to it or not. It’s none of my business whether it does or not. But I have to let it go. And it’s for those who can relate to it and are going through similar experiences.”
Tems went on to say that she had no idea she would earn so many praises, emphasising that all she wanted to do was sing.
