Lionel Messi, Argentina’s captain, has now become CONMEBOL’s leading scorer in World Cup qualifiers.
Messi scored twice as Argentina defeated Peru 2-0 on Tuesday, bringing his career total to 31 goals.
The 36-year-old has now overtaken Uruguay’s Luis Suarez.
Messi returned to the starting lineup after being sidelined or sitting on the bench for the previous four weeks due to a muscular ailment.

Argentina took the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to a magnificent effort from the Inter Miami star, and they doubled their lead 10 minutes later thanks to a ferocious finish from Enzo Fernandez’s assist.
Messi was then denied a hat-trick in the second half after a goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
