In his first 14 games with the club, the 36-year-old scored 11 goals and provided eight assists, inspiring them to their first title, the inaugural Leagues Cup.
He was unable, however, to lead them to the MLS playoffs.
Messi follows in the footsteps of previous Miami award winners Gonzalo Higuain and Lewis Morgan.
The news comes just days after Argentina captain Lionel Messi won his sixth Ballon d’Or.
