Tinubu Suspends Betta Edu Over Alleged Diversion of N585.189m
President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, from office with immediate effect
Recall that the Presidency had stated that the appropriate authorities are investigating the financial irregularity involving the transfer of N585.189 million by the Minister.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that appropriate action would be taken after the investigation
Reports indicate that about N585.189 million allocated for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states was allegedly diverted into a private account.
This resulted in widespread anger and a demand for Edu’s dismissal and prosecution.
In a document that gained widespread attention and carried Edu’s signature, the Minister instructed the disbursement of N585.189 million into the private account of Bridget Mojisola Oniyelu through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation
The leaked document disclosed that the funds were deposited into Oniyelu’s account.fAmid the widespread outrage, Edu, as conveyed by her Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Rasheed Zubair, affirmed that the payment followed due process.
