Nigerian music superstar, Wizkid has taken to social media to express his frustration with being labeled solely as an Afrobeats artist.
In a series of posts on his Instastories, the Grammy-winning singer announced his upcoming album, ‘Morayo’, while also distancing himself from the Afrobeats genre.
Despite his immense success with hits like ‘Ojuelegba’ and ‘Pakurumo’, Wizkid made it clear that ‘Morayo’ is not targeted towards Afrobeats enthusiasts.
He urged his followers not to categorize him as an “Afrobeats artiste” and even discouraged fans of his earlier Afrobeats tracks from embracing his new album.
Wizkid wrote, “Album name ‘Morayo’ best I ever made. I am not an Afrobeats artistes. Don’t call me that.
“If you like Afrobeats please don’t download my album, I’m not Afro anything.
“And please if you like ‘Pakuromo’ Wizkid, don’t like this album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and life.”
The music star also issued a stern warning to bloggers, requesting them not to “post my new album when it drops”.
The exact reasons behind Wizkid’s discontent remain undisclosed.
Afrobeats has garnered significant global recognition in recent years, with artists like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy elevating the genre to international acclaim.
However, Wizkid’s recent stance highlights a potential shift in his artistic direction, challenging the boundaries of traditional genre labels.
KanyiDaily recalls that Burna Boy claimed that Afrobeats often lacks depth and substance, characterizing it as a genre primarily centered around creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.
