Nigerian dancehall singer, Cynthia Morgan has criticized fellow artists Burna Boy and Wizkid for their recent comments downplaying Afrobeats.
In a post on her Instagram page, Cynthia Morgan highlighted how many artists who now speak negatively about Afrobeats were once striving to be its prominent figures, seeking validation from the genre.
The singer expressed frustration that after using Afrobeats to elevate their careers, they now seek to undermine its significance.
She emphasized that, whether artists acknowledge it or not, Afrobeats remains an integral part of their musical identity.
Morgan encouraged artists not to dismiss genres they’ve benefited from, urging them to respect the diverse musical landscape that has contributed to their success.
“90 percent of the artists claiming Afrobeats ain’t shit now was once struggling to be its Prince or King. Now that they think they’ve used her they now think they can dump her by talking down on her. Unknowing to them even their heartbeat is Afrobeats”.
“Don’t be scared. Genres go and come and switching wouldn’t be a problem when you honor every genre that once fed you,” she wrote.
KanyiDaily recalls that Wizkid recently faced backlash after he urged his followers not to label him as an “Afrobeats artiste”.
