The Black Entertainment Television Network (BET) has announced the nominees for the 2024 BET Awards, with five Nigerian artists making the list.
Ayra Starr leads with three nominations: Best New Artist, Best International Act, and the BET Her award for her song “Commas.”
The Nigerian singer will compete against big names like Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, and Victoria Monét in the BET Her category.
Tems has two nominations. She’s up for Video Director of the Year for her music video “Me & U,” which is also nominated for the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.
Burna Boy is recognized in the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist categories, where he’ll compete with Chris Brown, Drake, and Usher.
Seyi Vibez is nominated for Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act, and Asake is up for Best International Act alongside artists like Tyla, Aya Nakamura, and Focalistic.
Chris Brown’s song “Sensational,” featuring Nigerian stars Davido and Lojay, is also nominated for the Viewer’s Choice Award.
South African singer Tyla received four nominations, including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, Viewer’s Choice Award, and Best International Act.
In the film category, Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri is nominated for Best Actress, competing with Angela Bassett, Danielle Brooks, Fantasia, Halle Bailey, Issa Rae, and Regina King.
Nigerian-British actor Damson Idris is nominated for Best Actor, alongside Colman Domingo, Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, Jeffrey Wright, and Lakeith Stanfield.
The 2024 BET Awards, celebrating “Standing on Culture,” will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30 at 8 pm ET/PT. Voting for the Viewer’s Choice Award starts on June 6 and ends on June 30.
