Essien Etop Andrew, the deputy comptroller in charge of revenue at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has died.
The customs officer collapsed while answering questions from the House of Representatives’ committee on public accounts.
Andrew was taken to the National Assembly clinic where he was pronounced dead on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
The Committee chairman, Bamidele Salam announced that hearings will be suspended for a week in his honor.
“It was a very sad incident. He was very eloquent and clearly understood the issues being considered,” the lawmaker told TheCable.
“He suddenly said he wanted to drink water, to which we obliged and even asked if he needed some tea.
“It was sad he died in active service. Our committee is suspending other hearings for the week in his honour.”
In a statement, the spokesperson of the house of representatives, Akin Rotimi said the green chamber will investigate the incident.
Rotimi confirmed that Essien Andrew developed health complications during the interaction with the lawmakers.
“During the engagement, which occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 25 June 2024, the official developed sudden health complications.
Despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly clinic, he unfortunately passed away,” Mr Rotimi said.
He said the reps will “support efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and is cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to ensure all necessary protocols are followed”.
Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, expressed his condolences, saying the lower legislative chamber is “deeply saddened” by the officer’s death.
