Legendary Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly passed away at 72.
According to reports, Onyeka Onwenu collapsed on Tuesday night, July 30, while performing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
It was gathered that the entertainer was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was pronounced dead.
While her family hasn’t officially announced her death, people who were at the party confirmed the sad news.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.
“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” an eyewitness said.
Another attendee said, “I have never seen anything like this before. She had just come down from the stage after performing energetically and admirably as always. And went to her seat where she slumped. It is still like a dream.”
Born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her career as a singer and quickly gained fame for her distinctive voice and powerful lyrics.
the singer addressed social issues in her music, earning the nickname “Elegant Stallion” for her grace and poise. She is well-remembered for albums like “In The Morning Light” and “Dancing In The Sun.”
Onwenu was also a gifted actress, starring in many Nollywood films, including “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart.”
In addition to her entertainment career, Onwenu was a journalist and politician, serving as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. She was also a strong advocate for women’s rights and social justice.
Onyeka Onwenu was a beloved figure in Nigeria and beyond, known for her musical talent, impactful acting, and dedication to social causes.
