Germany’s Yemisi Ogunleye has won the gold medal in women’s shot put at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with an impressive throw of 20.00 meters.
Yemisi Ogunleye’s victory is Germany’s first in the event since Astrid Kumbernuss won in 1996.
Ogunleye celebrated her win by wrapping herself in the German flag and ringing the victory bell.
Born to a Nigerian father and German mother, the athlete’s performance surprised many.
New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche won the silver medal with a throw of 19.86 meters, and China’s Song Jiayuan took bronze with 19.32 meters.
Wesche had a personal best on her fifth attempt and seemed set to win, but Ogunleye responded with her winning throw.
Nigeria did not have a representative in the women’s shot put event where Ogunleye won gold.
