A mother hippopotamus, protecting her baby, has killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at an orchard owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, in Kebbi State.
Reports indicate that 60-year-old Maigadi was attacked while fishing in the Yauri River near Tillo Village in Yauri Local Government Area on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
It is believed that the hippo may have seen Maigadi as a threat to its young, leading it to attack in self-defense.
The Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, and the Kebbi State Government confirmed the tragic incident.
“Maigadi has been buried, according Islamic rites in Yauri, after a funeral prayer,” Shu’aibu said.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, also expressed his condolences to the Yauri Emirate and the family of the deceased through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris.
The governor prayed for Allah to forgive Maigadi’s sins and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
