Nigeria’s youth women’s national team, the Falconets, have been eliminated from the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
On Friday morning, September 13, 2024, the Falconets lost 2-1 to Japan in their round of 16 match.
Before this game, the Falconets had a mixed run, losing to Germany but securing wins against South Korea and Venezuela.
Meanwhile, Japan dominated their group stage with victories over Austria, Ghana, and New Zealand.
Facing Japan was always going to be a tough challenge for the Falconets and their coach, Chris Danjuma.
In a first half with limited scoring opportunities, Japan took the lead when Miyu Matsunaga scored from a Rihona Ujihara assist in the 33rd minute, sending Japan into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Japan continued to control the game in the second half, extending their lead in the 65th minute with a goal from Maya Hijikata.
The Falconets fought back late, with Olushola Shobowale scoring in added time from a pass by Goodness Osigwe, but it was not enough to force extra time.
The match ended 2-1 in favor of Japan, who now advance to face Spain in the quarterfinals, while the Falconets exit the tournament.
