Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended after a video allegedly showed him making negative comments about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) confirmed the suspension, stating it takes effect immediately while a full investigation takes place.
David Coote, who has officiated in the Premier League since 2018, refereed Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.
The video in question, still unverified, reportedly mentioned a past match between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the video, Coote is said to call Klopp “arrogant” and uses offensive language.
The authenticity and timing of the video are yet to be confirmed, but Klopp had criticized Coote for not awarding fouls against Burnley players in that game.
PGMOL said it will not comment further until the investigation is completed.
Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano shared the news on X, stating, “Official: PL referee David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation.
“PGMOL will make no further comment until that process is complete.”
