President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit.
Tinubu anded late Sunday night, November 17, and was welcomed by Brazil’s Ambassador for External Relations, Breno Costa.
Accompanying the president are key ministers, including Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Idi Mukhtar Maiha (Livestock Development), Hannatu Musawa (Tourism, Culture, and Creativity), Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Agriculture and Food Security), and National Intelligence Agency Director General, Amb. Mohammed Mohammed.
During the summit, Tinubu is set to engage in bilateral discussions aimed at advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms.
The summit, with the theme: “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will focus on three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social, and environmental – and the reform of global governance.
The event, hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, will focus on themes such as global governance reforms, sustainability, climate change, and the digital economy. Other critical topics include the Israel–Hamas conflict and tensions between the US and China.
The Leaders’ Summit, the climax of the G20 work carried out over the year through Ministerial Meetings, Working Groups, and Engagement Groups, would be presented for adoption at the summit.
The summit will be attended by 19 member countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canad pl China, Germany, France, India, and Indonesia.
Others are Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the UK, and the US.
Tinubu is attending the 2024 G20 summit as the organisers invited representatives of the African Union and the European Union.
Lula da Silva has prioritized food security and poverty eradication, aligning with the summit’s theme: “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.”
This two-day summit will also highlight the agreements and collaborative efforts made throughout the year by the G20 presidency, concluding with decisions on addressing pressing global challenges.
