Donald Trump, the U.S. President-elect, is reportedly planning to sign an executive order banning transgender individuals from serving in the military on his first day in office.
The Sunday Times reported that the proposed order could lead to the “medical discharge” of up to 15,000 active-duty service members, labeling them unfit for service.
According to the report, the ban would also prevent transgender individuals from enlisting, as all military branches face ongoing recruitment challenges.
Trump is expected to sign the order on January 20, 2025, and has tapped former Fox News host Pete Hegseth to head the Department of Defense.
The 78-year-old former president has also vowed to eliminate “woke” policies across federal agencies.
In a recent podcast, Hegseth criticized the inclusion of transgender service members, claiming it creates complications that differ from racial integration.
He argued that transgender individuals are “not deployable” because they rely on certain medications.
