Ajax Amsterdam FC has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support former player, Tijani Babangida after a devastating car accident claimed the lives of his family members.
The tragic incident occurred on May 9 along the Kaduna-Zaria highway.
Babangida, who played for Ajax for seven years, was traveling with his younger brother Ibrahim, his wife, his one-year-old son Fadil, and a maid when the accident happened.
Ibrahim died at the scene, while Tijani Babangida’s son, Fadil succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
Babangida’s wife suffered severe injuries, losing an eye and undergoing facial reconstruction surgery. The maid also sustained a fractured leg.
Since the accident, Babangida has relocated to the Netherlands to support his wife as she receives medical treatment.
Ajax recently shared a documentary highlighting the tragedy and the support Babangida has received from the football community.
The club announced that “many good friends from football” have initiated a crowdfunding campaign to help him cope with the aftermath of the accident.
“Six months ago, Tijani Babangida’s world collapsed. In a serious car accident, he lost his one-and-a-half-year-old son and his younger brother, while his wife was seriously injured,” the documentary caption read.
“‘Baba’ can count on the support of many good friends from football. They are helping him with everything and have started a crowdfunding campaign.”
Babangida had a successful stint at Ajax, winning the Eredivisie title in 1998 and two Dutch Cup trophies. During his seven years with the club, he made 77 appearances and scored 20 goals.
