Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has been released after fulfilling his bail conditions and is heading back to his home in Lagos.
This was announced by politician and activist Omoyele Sowore, who confirmed Dele Farotimi’s release from custody on Tuesday, December 24.
KanyiDaily recalls that Dele Farotimi was arrested earlier in the month over allegations of defaming the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola.
He had been remanded at a correctional facility in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State after appearing at the Magistrate Court under tight security on Friday morning.
Just days prior, a Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti granted Farotimi bail under strict conditions, including a N30 million bond, two sureties (one being a property owner), the submission of his passport, and a restriction on media interviews post-release.
Sowore shared the update on X, saying, “I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti state and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues!”
Another activist and lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu, also confirmed Farotimi’s release, tweeting, “In Ekiti, @DeleFarotimi has perfected bail & regained his freedom.
“He’ll be on his way back to Lagos. To all the friends of Justice who have been vigilant through this, we say please remain vigilant. It is not the end nor the beginning of the end. This is an #AttritionMarathon.”
Meanwhile, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has dismissed a request from Afe Babalola SAN’s law firm to revoke the practicing license of Dele Farotimi.
