Former heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury has expressed frustration after losing a unanimous decision to Oleksandr Usyk in their title rematch, claiming he had been “robbed.”
Earlier this year in May, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury by split decision to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis.
On Saturday, December 21, 2024, the Ukrainian retained his WBA, WBO, and WBC titles, with all three judges scoring the fight 116-112 in his favor.
The 36-year-old Fury performed well in the early rounds, landing some standout punches. However, Usyk’s consistent work rate and cleaner shots won over the judges.
With this victory, Usyk, 37, extended his undefeated record to 23 professional wins.
The Olympic gold medalist and former cruiserweight champion praised Fury after the fight, saying, “He [Tyson Fury] is a great fighter, he is a great opponent. An unbelievable 24 rounds for my career. Thank you so much.”
Fury, a two-time world champion, now has two losses on his record—both to Usyk—alongside 34 wins and one draw. Before their encounters, Fury had been unbeaten in 35 professional fights.
At the final bell, Fury celebrated as if he had won but appeared stunned when the scores were announced.
Fury avoided an in-ring interview immediately after the fight but told reporters on his way to the dressing room, “I swear to God I thought I won it by at least three rounds. I bossed the fight, on front foot all night.”
In a post-fight press conference, Fury doubled down on his belief that the decision was unjust, saying “I was robbed there.”
He referenced his promoter Frank Warren’s opinion, saying, “Frank had me three or four rounds up, a lot of people had me at least two. It is what it is, I am not going to cry over spilt milk, it has happened now.
“I have been in boxing all my life and you can’t change any decision, but I will always feel hard done by. When you don’t get a knockout, you can’t guarantee a win.
“I think I won both fights. There is no doubt in my mind I won this fight. I think Usyk got a Christmas gift but it’s not Oleksandr’s fault.”
With Usyk securing a second victory over Fury, the chances of a trilogy fight appear slim. Fury’s future in the ring remains uncertain. While he hinted at retirement, he hasn’t made a final decision.
“I want to go home and have a good Christmas,” Fury said. “I have worked hard for this fight. Thanks to everyone who came and supported. “You may see me fight again, you may not.”
KanyiDaily recalls that a former UFC champion, Francis Ngannou had insisted that he won his boxing battle against Tyson Fury, despite a split result in favour of the Briton.
