The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has called on a former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, to stop interfering in his affairs.
Nyesom Wike made the remark in response to Odili’s recent claim that Siminalayi Fubara, the current governor of Rivers State, prevented Wike from turning the state into his personal property.
Peter Odili made the comments during a thanksgiving service held by Martin Chike Amaewhule, a factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Odili praised Fubara for restoring happiness to civil servants and the people of Rivers State, claiming this level of governance had not been seen since he left office in 2007.
The elder statesman said “Fubara emancipated Rivers people steadied governance and made civil servants and Rivers people happier as it used to be until he left office in 2007”.
In a statement released on Sunday by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s media aide, the minister criticized Odili for his remarks, accusing him of hypocrisy.
Wike said Odili’s actions over the years contradict his accusations, stating that Odili had turned Rivers into a “family enterprise.”
He alleged that Odili prioritized his family over others, pointing out that Odili gave a commissioner’s slot meant for his late elder brother’s son to his own daughter instead.
The minister noted that Odili’s behavior has made him a subject of ridicule and called on him to act in a manner befitting an elder statesman.
He said, “Between him and myself, who has turned Rivers State to his personal estate? His wife is a Chairman of the Governing Council, his daughter is a commissioner, his other daughter is a judge and he is the general overseer.
“Who has now turned Rivers State to his private estate? I am sure if care is not taken, if there is a chance, he can even arrange a marriage for the governor.
“It was his nephew, his late senior brother’s son that was recommended for commissioner. He took the slot and gave it to his own daughter.
“Someone who didn’t remember to stand for the son of his late elder brother, is that an elder statesman? But why reduce yourself to such a laughing stock.”
Wike further accused Odili of lacking the courage and capacity to compete in the 2007 presidential race, claiming the former governor withdrew due to pressure from then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
KanyiDaily recalls that Governor Siminalayi Fubara removed Nyesom Mike’s ally, Eze Chidi Awuse as the Chairman of Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.
