Manchester United are on the verge of sealing a £30 million transfer for Lecce left wing-back Patrick Dorgu.
It was gathered that most of the key details have already been agreed upon, and discussions are progressing well regarding the final structure of the deal.
If completed, Patrick Dorgu will become Ruben Amorim’s first signing as Manchester United’s manager.
The 20-year-old defender is eager to join, and personal terms are not expected to be an issue.
From the moment Amorim took charge, strengthening the left wing-back position was identified as a top priority, making Dorgu’s signing one of the most likely transfers in this window.
Patrick Dorgu has impressed since moving to Lecce from Danish club Nordsjaelland in 2022, making 53 Serie A appearances and earning four caps for Denmark.
His rapid development has caught United’s attention, as he only made his senior debut last year but is already looking to take the next step in his career.
Lecce, determined to secure their Serie A status for a third consecutive season, spotted Dorgu’s potential early on while he was in Nordsjaelland’s renowned academy.
Alexander Riget, Nordsjaelland’s technical director, recallec how the club identified him at just 12 years old.
Though he played in their U13 team a year ahead of his age group, his standout development came later, around the age of 16 or 17.
“Our good scouting spotted him quite fast,” Riget told Sky Sports. “It required Riget and the current Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup to make the trip to Jutland to see him. It is a five-hour drive from here.”
“They saw something in Dorgu, just 12 years old at the time. He played “one year up” in their U13 team but was not a standout star.
“He was always a good player but he developed very well a little later, at the age of 16 or 17. Before long, he was gone.”
“His journey is a little different from many of our other players. Normally, they play 50 to 100 games and then leave for a bigger club.” Is that frustrating? “No, we were still a very important part of his journey. We are very happy about his situation at the moment.”
Now, with a move to Old Trafford on the horizon, Patrick Dorgu is set to take the next major step in his career.
