Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found dead in their hone at Santa Fe, New Mexico on Wednesday.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deaths, with Sheriff Adan Mendoza stating that no foul play is suspected.
“We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail.
“This is an active investigation – however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor,” the statement reads.
Officials are awaiting further details, including the cause of death.
Gene Hackman, who was 95, was known for his legendary roles in films such as ‘The French Connection”, “Unforgiven”, and “The Royal Tenenbaums”.
He won two Academy Awards during a career that spanned over six decades.
His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was 63. The couple had been married since 1991 and lived in the Santa Fe Summit community.
Fans have been mourning his passing, with tributes pouring in on social media.
The couple was last seen in public in 2023 when they were spotted at a Santa Fe restaurant.
Before that, their last public appearance together was at the 2003 Golden Globe Awards, where Hackman received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
Investigators are continuing their inquiries, and further details about their deaths are expected in the coming days.
“All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant,” New Mexico, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said.
