A fresh wave of #EndBadGovernance protests has erupted in Akure, Ondo State, as students and youths take to the streets demanding urgent action from the government over rising insecurity and unfulfilled promises.
The demonstration follows increasing cases of kidnappings, farmer-herder clashes, and general insecurity across the state, with students accusing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration of failing to address their concerns.
The protest, which took place on Thursday, was organized by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee, Ondo Axis. Protesters carried placards with messages like “Enough is Enough” and “We Demand Action Now” while marching through major roads in Akure.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS leaders, including its chairman Oluwarotimi Joshua and South West Zone D Deputy Coordinator Naheem Ademola, criticized the government for failing to address student welfare and the poor state of educational infrastructure despite multiple engagements.
They accused the state government of ignoring their demands and failing to provide adequate learning facilities, renovate hostels, and implement student-friendly policies.
NANS outlined several key demands, including improved security for students, particularly those undergoing industrial training, the fulfillment of government promises to procure student buses, support for student entrepreneurship programs, and justice for an attack on NANS members in Ogbese.
They also demanded that student representatives be included in education policy-making.
The statement warned that the attack on NANS members in Ogbese remained unresolved and that students would not remain silent while being neglected.
The student body called on all students in the state to join the demonstration, emphasizing that while the protest would be peaceful, it was a firm stand against government inaction.
The protest highlights growing frustration among young people in the state over governance issues, with students vowing to hold the government accountable for their education and welfare.
